IB INFORMATION MEETINGS INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
Information for rising 9th and 10th grade applicants (W-L Pre-IB)
Application Process for 2013-2014 School Year
Each student who wishes to participate in W-L’s Pre-IB program must submit a Pre-IB application. The Pre-IB application, cumulative transcript, and APS pupil transfer application (transfer applicants only) are due to the W-L IB office by January 18, 2013.
- Algebra I or greater in 8th grade or Geometry or greater in 9th grade
- Spanish II, French II, Arabic II, Chinese II or Latin I in 8th grade OR Spanish III, French III, Arabic III, Chinese III or Latin II in 9th grade
- A's and B's in English and History
- A's and B's in all subjects
- Short answer/essay questions
Selection Process An admissions committee scores each student’s application using a rubric which incorporates the above- mentioned prerequisites and the student’s short-answer/essay and ranks applicants according to score. Any student that scores an 11 or higher, out of a possible 15 points, is deemed qualified for acceptance. There is no cap for applicants whose home school is Washington-Lee. The school board will announce at High School Information Night the number of IB transfers that W-L will accept for the 2013-2014 school year. If the number of qualified transfers exceeds the number of available transfer positions, a random, double-blind lottery will be conducted by the Superintendent’s Office to determine which students are selected. The remaining students will be placed on a waiting list of alternates to be considered in the event that a student who is offered a position in the program chooses not to accept. As space becomes available, admission will be offered to students on the waiting list in the order established by the lottery. When a student on the waiting list is eligible to fill a vacancy in an existing class, the IB Coordinator will contact the family and invite them to enroll their child. All middle schools will be notified by January 25, 2013. Individual applicants will be notified in writing by February 1, 2013.
NEW IB LANGUAGE COURSES AT WASHINGTON-LEE
In addition to IB Spanish, French, and Latin, Washington-Lee will offer IB Arabic and Chinese B Standard Level in the Fall of SY 2013-2014. The first students will take the IB exam in their senior year (spring 2015). Please keep in mind that prospective students will still need four years of Arabic or Chinese prior to entering IB Arabic or Chinese in the junior year.
