School Accident Insurance

APS provides an opportunity to purchase student accident insurance. Medical bills for injuries that happen on school grounds or at school–sponsored events are the parents’ responsibility. If you do not have medical insurance and believe that payment will be a hardship for you, APS provides the opportunity for you to purchase school accident insurance. It is highly recommended that parents consider using this as a secondary insurance for their student athlete. Markel Insurance will provide school accident insurance for the 2012-13 school year. It may be purchased online (click below).

Baseball Team Hosts South Arlington Lions Night and Arlington Babe Ruth Red Sox

Friday, April 20, was a busy night for the Yorktown Varsity Baseball team.  In addition to hosting Falls Church, the team hosted South Arlington Lions Appreciation Night.  The South Arlington Lions have partnered with the baseball team for years, supporting the team with financial assistance.  The team members assist with the annual Christmas tree sale and the Club donates a substantial amount of money to the team.  We thank the South Arlington Lions for their support of Yorktown baseball.  Also, on this night, the team welcomed the 10 and under Arlington Babe Ruth Red Sox who shadowed Yorktown players on the field for pre-game introductions.

New Facilities Open Including Fully Equipped Weight Room

Phase Two of the three-phase renovation of Yorktown is complete and with its opening on January 3, the athletic department welcomes the addition of a new main gym, new wrestling room and new weight room.  After three years of fundraising, careful research and planning, the new weight room area opens with all new Atlantis and Hammer Strength equipment.  The $45,000 project was funded with donations collected from individuals, booster clubs and fundraisers.  The new equipment and layout will allow for use by all students (PE, athletes and general after school use) as equipment better suited for novices is supplemented by four half-racks for those who desire a more thorough workout.  These offerings are complemented by the adjacent ten-piece cardio room.  The first basketball games were played on January 3 with the freshmen and JV girls teams using the "new" home court advantage to post victories over Robinson.  The new pool opened January 15 and served as the site for the National District Swim & Dive tournament.

Yorktown Modifies Student-Athlete Academic Eligibility Plan

As a result of discussions with student-athletes, parents, teachers and coaches, there have been some revisions to the student-athlete academic eligibility plan for the 2011-12 school year. While students will still be required to maintain five Cs or better anytime interim grades or quarter grades are released, all students will partake in proactive Academic Check-Ups approximately a week before interim or quarter grades are inputted. The goal of the Academic Check-Up form is to allow the coach and student-athlete to determine the student's current academic standing and to formulate a plan to insure the student meets the five C minimum before grades come out. There are many different resources students can use in order to maintain or raise their grades - meeting with teachers before or after school, attending after school help sessions or attending Saturday school. More information on the plan is available below under the link to Athletic Eligibility.

Yorktown Wins Claudia Dodson Wachovia Sportsmanship, Ethics, & Integrity Award

Yorktown is one of 23 schools in the state to receive this year's (2010-11) Claudia Dodson Wachovia Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award presented by the Virginia High School League. This is the second time Yorktown has won the award (2004-05). This recognition represents an ongoing effort to promote good sportsmanship throughout the activities program and reflects a commitment to a vision of using activities as a means to help students develop socially, emotionally and athletically.  We congratulate our entire activities community - coaches, parents, students and spectators - for their role in creating an environment where sportsmanship is valued.

Impact Testing

Yorktown is pleased to offer ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) as an option for our student-athletes.  ImPACT is a concussion evaluation software program which serves as a tool for medically trained evaluators in cases of suspected head injury. The program assists the evaluator in determining an athlete's ability to return to play through a comparison of individual baseline data (pre-concussion test results) and post-concussion test results. ImPACT testing is one tool of several assessments that determines an athlete's return to play. Our certified athletic trainer coordinates with the coaches of most sports to schedule a time at the beginning of each season to offer the opportunity for our student-athletes to be baseline tested. Many of our athletes have already completed testing, however, not all students are or will be tested.  If your son or daughter has not been tested by the second week after tryouts and you would like them to be tested or if you have questions about the ImPACT program, please feel free to contact Mr. Bruce Ferratt, ATC, at 703-228-5421.
