A group of approximately 40 high school students are seated in desks in a classroom taking a test. Interested students from Washington County's four high schools took the ASVAB at the Neff Center.

Washington County Schools offered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery examination on February 10, 2012. Thirty-eight students took the test. The number represented the largest group ever to be tested since the Neff Center began offering the test eleven years ago.

The test has two values for the examinee. First, a pre-determined overall score must be attained before an individual can enlist in the armed forces. Secondly, Once a score is attained, students can be advised about their suitability for various jobs within the military.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors were invited to take the test. Local members of the armed services helped with proctoring. Washington County Schools salutes the young people who are considering making the nation's security part of their career plans.

Students gather at the dairy section of a grocery store to listen to a man talk about milk. Students listen to Mr. Taylor of Food City explain about the dairy section.

Abingdon Elementary Preschool loves to take field trips! Their most recent trip was to Food City where Mr. Taylor showed the class where the milk and dairy, meat and protein, breads and grains, fruits and vegetables, and of course, cookies and milk groups, are at the grocery store. The children walked into the giant refrigerator and freezer. They walked into a big truck trailer that brings the food to Food City. By going on these types of fields trips, the children experience so much more about the subjects they are learning at school by seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, and tasting them! This gives the children an opportunity to build an understanding of those words they will read as they begin to read. Before the students left Food City, all the preschoolers choose a healthy snack to take back to school! Another wonderful experience for preschoolers at Abingdon Elementary School!

Students gather in a school cafeteria kitchen to watch a worker make bread. Mrs. Gobble, with Abingdon Elementary School cafeteria, demonstrates the art of bread making to pre-kindergarteners

The months of January and February are important months for Abingdon Elementary Preschool students. The children learn about healthy habits to keep them from getting sick during the winter months. They learn that eating healthy foods is a good way to stay healthy! The preschool decided to visit their school cafeteria to see all the healthy foods being prepared for their lunches. Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Gobble, Mrs. Weddle, Mrs. Sullins, Mrs.King, and Mrs. Casey showed the children how the food is prepared. Mrs. Stevenson took the children for a tour. Mrs. Gobble made a loaf of bread for snack. The children made butter for the bread by shaking cream until it turned into butter and a yummy snack was enjoyed by all. The preschoolers couldn't wait to tell Mommy and Daddy how they learned to make bread and butter! Thank you Abingdon Elementary School cafeteria ladies!

Twelve members of the Holston High School 4-H club recently participated in a community service project. Club members packed 1800 food bags for elementary students in Russell and Washington counties. This project was a part of the United Way’s “Backpack Unite” program designed to assist elementary school students. Backpacks Unite delivers nutritious prepackaged food in order to supplement the student's needs over a weekend. Each student in the program receives a bag once per month. The 4-H club members enjoyed being a part of this program. Not only did they have a chance to help their community, but this also gave them a chance to use their organizational skills to accomplish a collective goal.

The Patrick Henry Forensics team competed in the district tournament at Chilhowie High School on February 8, 2012. The team finished fourth overall, which is the highest finish in Patrick Henry High School history. Even more remarkable, none of these students have ever competed in forensics before! Two students will continue to Regionals on March 3: Emma B. for her second place finish in Original Oratory, and Ella. B. for her second place finish in Extemporaneous Speaking. In addition, two other entries finished fourth as alternates to Regionals: Melina R. & Tori T. competed in Serious Duo Interpretation and Anthony R. & Alaura S. in Humorous Duo Interpretation. Mrs. Seymore would like to thank all of the team members for their hard work and dedication including her speech fundamentals students from first semester, the drama students, and Mrs. Belcher for help in preparing these competition pieces.
